The Wellness Corner

This year, I am excited to announce that we will have a Wellness Corner in the classroom! Students are encouraged to take 5 minute mental health break during extended work periods. During this time they can knit, yoga, meditate, colour, or read!

Welcome back to School!

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the beginning of an exciting school year at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Public School! I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer. Mme. Campanaro (Homeroom, English, Math, Health), Mr Hamelin (French, Science), Mr Cherette (Physical Education), and Mme Skead (Music), Mr. Gratton (History/Geography), and Mme. Bilton (Visual Arts), have the pleasure of teaching your child this year. I am looking forward to working with each and every one of you, as well as the opportunity to meet with you on Curriculum Night.

Home-School Communication

It is important that your child has a personal organizational tool this year to keep track of homework and assignments. For students who choose to purchase them, agendas will be sold in the front foyer during the first week of school for $5 on a first-come/first-serve basis. You can also choose to purchase your own. As well, I will be posting homework on Google Classroom and classroom blog.

Sign up for Class Dojo

I will be using an app called classdojo. Class Dojo is an online behavior management system intended to foster positive student behaviors and classroom culture. Students earn ‘Dojo Points’ based on their classroom conduct. Teachers use Class Dojo to keep parents up to date on student progress and classroom happenings. Class Dojo is completely free for users. Class Dojo’s primary goal is to encourage positive student behaviors and to provide a means for teachers and parents to communicate frequently and effectively about student development. I have included the sign up procedure.

Technology

I would like to encourage your student to bring their own device if they have a laptop. This will help to increase the number of devices we have available to us when working in class. Many students in grade eight have cell phones which can often be a distraction in class. I am requesting that cell phones are either left in lockers or turned off in class. We may periodically use them for curriculum purposes but only at the direction of the teacher. If you need to reach your child urgently during the day, you can contact the office who will promptly relay the message.

Supplies and Binders

Students are expected to have the correct supplies at school every day. It is very important that their items be kept in a pencil case labeled with their name. Below is a list of suggested supplies:

Geometry Set

Scientific Calculator

Ruler

Eraser

2 Binders

Three hole punched, lined paper

Kleenex box donation

Dividers

Completed Assignments/Tests

During the school year, when students bring home work, please sign and return back promptly. I will also be posting marks on Google Classroom which you can ask your child to show to you. This will allow you to catch a glimpse of the level of work that your child has been producing and address any concerns.

Lockers

Students are expected to purchase a combination lock by Friday, September 7th to secure their belongings. Laser locks and locks with keys are not permitted. Please review with your child the following security measures: students must keep their combination lock locked at all times. All their belongings should be in their locker and not on the floor and finally, under no circumstances should they share that combination with another student.

Individual Student Needs

In order for me to get to know your child better, please complete and return the attached “Parent Survey.”

Schedule

Your child will be given a copy of their schedule and a copy will also be posted on Blog.

I greatly appreciate all of the support and guidance that parents provide for students throughout the school year and look forward to working with you to provide an engaging and challenging educational environment for your children.

Yours sincerely,

A. Campanaro
